Lorena is experienced in treating a range of neurological conditions, including:
- Spinal Cord Injuries
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Traumatic Brain or Head Injury
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Stroke
- Demyelinating diseases
- Motor neurone disease
- Consequence of brain or spinal tumor
Our intervention is based on a client-centred approach, applying when possible, our knowledge and experience on rehab through the concept of neurodevelopment (Bobath).
Every client is given a thorough, individualised home assessment. The occupational therapist will obtain information about the client’s occupational profile (occupational history, patterns of daily living, interests, values, and needs) and will observe his or her actual performance in the activities of daily living to determine his or her skills, abilities and difficulties. Afterwards, the client and the OT will identify together his or her needs and the benefits that he or she can obtain from an occupational therapy treatment.
These needs can be one or any combination of the following inexhaustive list:
- To organize a programme of one-to-one home-based treatment, aimed to re-establish and/or improve functionality, safety, maximise independence or autonomy in all activities of daily living. The programme can be organized on the basis of one or more sessions weekly or monthly, according to the client’s needs.
- To receive feedback from the OT pertaining to the assessment with recommendations on how to adapt the way he/she is doing the activities, or to adapt or change routine or habits.
- To receive feedback from the OT about any necessary housing or environmental adaptations to improve his or her functionality and safety.
- To receive recommendations and training from the OT about any necessary new or adapted equipment, splints, techniques aids or assistive technologies which may help the client to adapt to symptoms and to minimise their effects on day to day life.
- A follow up can be arranged to see how the progression goes.
We recommend the participation of family members or carers during the assessment and during the treatment although this will be subject to our clients’ wishes..
